Steel Magnolias (1989)

Starring: Julia Roberts, Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Darryl Hannah

Directed by: Herbert Ross

PG. 117 mins

Revolves around a circle of close-knit friends that spend much of their time at a Louisiana beauty parlor discussing life, love, and loss. This is a film meant to empower women which contradicts itself again and again – women who take care of their own but still gossip about each other at the beauty parlour… women who complain about their husbands only seeing them as pretty housewives while they continue to do their hair and feel inadequate… There are definitely some outdated themes here because of the time period but even so, the great performances and heartwarming Southern feel make Steel Magnolias enjoyable – * * *
