Edward Scissorhands (1990)

Starring: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Alan Arkin, Kathy Baker, Anthony Michael Hall, Conchata Ferrell, Vincent Price

Directed by: Tim Burton

PG-13. 100 mins

The first (and best) collaboration between Johnny Depp and Tim Burton, Edward Scissorhands is a modern day gothic fairytale for all. Johnny Depp plays Edward, a man built by a brilliant inventor (Vincent Price) who died before he could give his invention hands. Sadly, Edward is stuck with scissors for hands and hides away in a dark castle on the hill that overlooks a quaint neighbourhood. One day, Avon lady Peg (Dianne Wiest) ventures up the hill and finds Edward. Pam, who is extremely kind and optimistic, invites him to stay at her house along with her family who doesn’t quite understand him but can tell he has a good heart. At first, the community is outraged but they soon discover that Edward has many talents and he begins working as a hairdresser and even makes good friends with Peg’s daughter Kim (Winona Ryder) who happens to have a boyfriend (Anthony Michael Hall) that doesn’t sit too well with Edward’s presence in their life. This is a often funny and tragic update on the Frankenstein tale that many won’t forget thanks to Burton’s imagination and all the endearing performances…. and did I mention Vincent Price? Edward Scissorhands is simply magical – * * * *
