Three Colours: Blue / Trois Couleurs: Bleu (1993)

blueStarring: Juliette Binoche, Benoit Regent, Florence Pernel, Charlotte Véry, Emmanuelle Riva, Hugues Quester

Directed by: Krzysztof Kieslowski

R. 98 mins

A hypnotic and powerful film. The first chapter in Kieslowski’s Three Colours trilogy, the film stars Juliette Binoche as Julie, the survivor of a terrible car crash that left her childless and widowed from her husband, a famous composer. After attempting suicide, she decides to break free of the past and make a better future. The trilogy loosely symbolizes the colours of the French flag and Blue certainly symbolizes liberty – at all costs. With minimal yet effective dialogue and a marvellously subtle performance from Binoche, Blue is a moody masterpiece – * * * *
