Enchanting and atmospheric, The Secret Garden transports you to another world. The film is based on Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story of a little girl (Kate Maberly) who discovers a secret garden on her mysterious uncle’s Victorian estate. Along with a friend and cousin, she restores the garden and they all enjoy the magical qualities it has to offer; as the garden grows, so do the relationships between the family and friends. The fantastic child actors are what really make this so charming and for anyone who grew up watching this film there is a definite sense of joyful nostalgia. The Secret Garden takes us back to a much simpler time with a story that says so much with so little. There are some great themes that will suit all ages and it contains much more cinematic and emotional resonance than most family films so for this and so many other reasons, this film is one to cherish – * * * *
