Natural Born Killers (1994)

Starring: Woody Harrelson, Juliette Lewis, Robert Downey Jr., Tommy Lee Jones, Tom Sizemore, Rodney Dangerfield

Directed by: Oliver Stone

R. 119mins.

Here we take a look at mass murder and the media through the manic lens of Oliver Stone. A gutsy assault on the senses, the experience of Natural Born Killers is purely visceral and understandably, will divide audiences. The film benefits from a cast just as electrifying – Harrelson and Lewis epitomize the ugly heroes that our society glorifies. While brilliant as a piece of experimental film, the film is certainly not without it’s flaws. It’s unclear as to whether Stone is suggesting the viewer is a part of the solution or the problem and by the MTV-esque conclusion, the film becomes exactly what it aims to criticize. Natural Born Killers is self-indulgent, over-the-top, and to some, it will appear that there is little meaning behind all the smoke and mirrors. That said, I will always admire this film for it’s complete lack of subtlety and for one of the most memorable opening sequences since Pulp Fiction* * * *
