Matilda (1996)

Starring: Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman, Embeth Davidtz, Pam Ferris, Paul Reubens

Directed by: Danny DeVito

PG. 98mins.

A dark and beautiful adaptation that Dahl would be proud to see on screen. This is the story of Matilda (Mara Wilson), a highly intelligent young girl with a family who just doesn’t appreciate her talents. Her parents (Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman) often ignore her wishes and insult her. The more she grows, the more she notices her telekinetic abilities which prove to be useful in getting back at her abusive family. A kind schoolteacher notices her gifts and encourages her frequently but the headmistress, Miss Trunchbull (Pam Ferris) is determined to make all the children suffer. Like all of Dahl’s stories, this is a dark tale with a heartfelt message. With the perfect cast and an adorable performance from Mara Wilson, Matilda is feel-good fun no matter what age you are – * * * *
