The Sea Inside / Mar Adentro (2004)

Starring: Javier Bardem, Belén Rueda, Lola Dueñas, Mabel Rivera, Celso Bugallo, Clara Segura

Directed by: Alejandro Amenábar

PG-13. 125 mins

Based on the compelling true story of Ramón Sampedro, a fisherman and poet who dove into shallow water and became a bedridden quadriplegic at the age of 26, The Sea Inside is a beautiful collaboration between Spain’s most talented contemporaries. Why Bardem wasn’t nominated for an Oscar, I’ll never understand. As Sampedro, a man bent on legalizing euthanasia and ending his life peacefully, Bardem has never seemed so alive. Simple and delicate visuals combined with an intelligent and passionate treatment on such a taboo subject make this film beautifully bittersweet – * * * *
