Alexander (2004)

Starring: Colin Farrell, Angelina Jolie, Val Kilmer, Jared Leto, Anthony Hopkins, Rosario Dawson

Directed by: Oliver Stone

R. 175 mins

Grates on the nerves and never rises to the ‘Greatness’ of it’s subject, Alexander is an overly long and emotionally distant wreck. Colin Farrell stars as the Macedonian conquerer in a role that would be much better suited to any number of actors besides him… he appears confused and Stone has turned him into a weeping mess. In choosing to focus on Alexander’s relationships, the battle sequences have little meaning and the characters are similar to those we might see on a soap opera. I would say the acting is terrible, but I can’t blame them entirely for having to work with an even worse script. There are some visually exciting moments and of course, the cast looks great given that this train wreck cost about 155 million but sadly, like our hero, Stone was far too ambitious and it resulted in his downfall – * 1/2
