Hostage (2005)

Starring: Bruce Willis, Ben Foster, Jonathan Tucker, Marshall Allman, Jimmy Bennett, Michelle Horn, Kevin Pollak

Directed by: Florent Emilio Siri

R. 113 mins

Over-the-top and entirely implausible, Hostage is still worth a watch for the exciting (yet bloody) action, epic thrills, and hint of mystery that just seems to increase in unnecessary complexity as it drags on. Bruce Willis, in his reliably good form, plays an ex-police negotiator turned small town cop who must save a wealthy family held hostage by some twisted teenagers. Heated and tense throughout, Siri and cast manage to make an illogical premise appear to be an unusually smart crime drama just above that B-movie status. Hostage is absurd, but good fun – * * * 1/2
