Casanova (2005)

Starring: Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Oliver Platt, Lena Olin

Directed by: Lasse Hallström

R. 110 mins

A whimsical period piece that turns the exciting life of the real charmer into a cutesy farce that’s easy on the eyes but nothing special. Heath Ledger plays Casanova and Sienna Miller plays the one lady that just might make him believe in true love after all. Directed by Lasse Hallström (Chocolat), it’s not a surprise that the film looks beautiful and contains all the expected slapstick humour wrapped in period costumes, but this one really lacks the soul of his previous efforts. Casanova is good fun but the humour is, like the man himself, a bit too smug for it’s own good and not very deserving of our time thanks to some less-than-seductive performances and the plot that slows to a crawl – * 1/2
