Marie Antoinette (2006)

Starring: Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Rip Torn, Rose Byrne, Blair Brown

Directed by: Sofia Coppola

PG-13. 123 mins

A visual feast, Marie Antoinette is a perfect case of style over substance. In Sofia Coppola’s modern take, we are treated to comic moments and a rocking soundtrack as she explores how the doomed young queen became the controversial catalyst to the French Revolution. Coppola takes us directly inside Versailles and though the experience is unique and the production values are astounding, the film drags along and many will dislike the modern campiness of it all. Kirsten Dunst is lovely but it’s a shame such an intriguing story just barely skims the surface on her true character, opting instead for a pretty and pink period film – * * 1/2
