One of the most underrated of Tarantino’s films and in my opinion, one of his best because it’s his most restrained effort. An homage to 70s sexploitation/demolition flicks, Death Proof is styled in that period but the dialogue is contemporary. Originally double-billed with Robert Rodriguez’s Planet Terror, the film follows a group of best friends who find themselves on the run from the mysterious Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) and his “deathproof” car. Some may find it’s plotting and dialogue tedious, but this is Tarantino at his most deliciously self-indulgent. Superbly crafted, intelligently scripted and impressively choreographed chase sequences make Death Proof an instant classic – * * * * 1/2
