Disturbia (2007)

Starring: Shia LaBoeauf, David Morse, Aaron Yoo, Sarah Roemer, Carrie-Anne Moss, Viola Davis

Directed by: D.J. Caruso

PG-13. 104 mins

What Disturbia lacks in creativity it certainly makes up for in casting and slick direction. Shia LaBeouf stars as Kale, a high school senior who has a tendency to behave badly after the sudden death of his father. Eventually, Kale is placed under house-arrest and he soon finds himself spying on his new neighbours: One, a beautiful girl (Sarah Roemer) and the other, a suspicious man (David Morse) who could just be the serial killer that everyone in his small town is afraid of. LaBeouf’s performance adds some much-needed humour and teen-romance to this creepy voyeur thriller. While it’s no Rear Window, Hitchcock would be impressed with Caruso’s pacing and subtle scares, even if the ending has the potential to spoil it all. Disturbia will please it’s teen demographic but most adults will find themselves a bit sleepy – * * * 1/2
