Let The Right one in / Låt den rätte komma in (2008)

Starring: Kåre Hedebrant, Lina Leandersson, Per Ragnar

Directed by: Tomas Alfredson

R. 114 mins

Haunting and wonderfully strange, Let the Right One In is not only one of the best foreign language films as of late but also a vampire film that completely reinvigorates the genre with intelligent storytelling and grisly scares. The story involves 12 year-old Oskar, a boy who is constantly bullied at school and yearns for someone to care for him. Soon, he makes friends with his mysterious new neighbour, Eli. Her arrival coincides with a series of murders in their small town and though Oskar has developed some innocent feelings for her, he suspects his first love just might be a vampire. This dark and often touching Swedish tale is based on John Ajvide Lindqvist’s novel, who also wrote the screenplay. Alfredson’s beautiful direction and the subtle exchanges between two young lovers make this truly mesmerizing – * * * *
