Mamma Mia! (2008)

Starring: Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfriend, Pierce Brosnan, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper

Directed by: Phyllida Lloyd

PG-13. 109 mins

A musical with bad singers and too much camp, even ABBA couldn’t dance to this. Adapted from the exceedingly better stage production, Mamma Mia! is there story of Sophie’s (Amanda Seyfried) quest to find out who her real father is before her wedding. After reading her mother’s (Meryl Streep) diary entries, its seems there are three possible candidates so she invites them all on her mother’s behalf to attend the wedding. Using the music of ABBA and Greece as the backdrop, there’s some beautiful scenery and some fun to be had but somewhere in the transfer from stage to screen there is some much-needed story missing. It’s best to do what the actors seem to be doing: have some fun and then forget that this awkward sing-a-long never ever happened – * *
