Hunger (2009)

Starring: Michael Fassbender, Liam Cunningham, Brian Milligan, Liam McMahon, Stuart Graham

Directed by: Steve McQueen

R. 92 mins

A disturbing and powerful work that illustrates a kind of strength so few of us could ever dream of possessing. In a startling performance, Fassbender plays Bobby Sands, the Irish Republican Army activist who went on a hunger strike to demonstrate one final stand against the cruel British prison guards. Bobby refuses to eat until the Irish officials recognize the IRA as a legitimate political organization and in the hopes that just the sight of his body will generate some sort of pity, even from those who seem to possess no humanity at all. Artist Steve McQueen directs with tremendous control and much of this story is told beautifully through images instead of dialogue. Hunger is a visceral experience that may hold less impact for those unfamiliar with the history but still, underneath this harsh reality there is a tender beating heart – * * * *
