Charming characters come to life with vibrant animation in this kids flick that offers more fun and adventure than most of its kind. The makers of Ice Age have traveled to a whole new part of the world to introduce audiences to Blu (Jesse Eisenberg), a domesticated, yet highly intelligent macaw who never learned to fly. Blu is a rare bird, not just for his lack of flying ability but more importantly, he is the last of his kind.. or so he thought. Linda, his owner and best friend, adores him and they both enjoy a simple life in their small Minnesota town until the day they are informed that there is another Macaw who just so happens to live in Rio de Janeiro. Reluctantly, the two head to Rio in the hopes of finding Jewel (Anne Hathaway), a female Macaw who could help save their species. Of course, the chemistry between them is a big issue – not the mention the fact that they are suddenly kidnapped by a group of animal smugglers, forcing both Blu and Jewel to work together and escape. The story is one of courage in the face of adversity and never judging a book by its cover; nothing new here, of course, but the story moves along swiftly and the emotions are sincere. The supporting cast brings plenty of laughs for both young and old, even if the story itself is formulaic. With plenty of wit and dazzling colour, Rio is innocent fun for all – * * *
