Restless (2011)

restlessStarring: Henry Hopper, Mia Wasikowska, Ryo Kase, Schuyler Fisk, Jane Adams II, Lusia Strus, Chin Han

Directed by: Gus Van Sant

PG-13. 91 mins

A precious exploration of life and death that’s undone by an array of insipid indie quirks. Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska) is the adorable terminal cancer patient with a love for the environment. Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper) is the awkward young man who now frequents funerals after the death of his parents. The two form an immediate connection and though Annabel’s death is imminent, they vow to make the best of their remaining days together. Sweet, but mostly strange, Van Sant’s existentialism misses the mark here. Restless contains tender performances but the emotions it elicits are far too brief – * *
