PG-13. 94 mins

A beautifully whimsical and well-acted film that just might be Mr. Anderson’s best work to date. It’s 1965 and on an island just off the coast of New England, two youngsters fall in love and run away from their parents into the wilderness. They are soon followed by the local sheriff (Bruce Willis), a zany Scout leader (Edward Norton), and social services (Tilda Swinton) as a storm begins to brew off in the distance. This is a raw and heartfelt film that should be celebrated because, while it contains all of Anderson’s idiosyncrasies, it is both nostalgic and refreshing for all ages. Moonrise Kingdom contains much more emotional honesty and less of the ‘hip’ eccentricities that may have pushed away moviegoers in the past. Instead, we are taken on a charming stroll through a kingdom that genuinely brings us joy and provides picturesque escapism as it’s finest – * * * *
