Brave (2012)

Starring: Kelly Macdonald, Emma Thompson, Billy Connolly, Julie Walters, Kevin McKidd, Craig Ferguson

Directed by: Mark Andrews & Brenda Chapman

PG. 93 mins

A beautifully animated fairytale that may not be Pixar’s best, but it should be commended for  giving young girls an exciting role model. Set in stunning Scotland, Brave tells the story of Merida (Kelly Macdonald) who is determined to defy her parents (Emma Thompson & Billy Connolly) and find her own way through life. A skilled archer and fiery redhead, Merida struggles to avoid an arranged marriage and in the process, turns to a witch for help. Chaos and hilarity ensue, along with some profound messages about love and loyalty. The mother-daughter relationship at the heart of this film is truly moving and though it doesn’t have the quirks of other Pixar films, Brave conjures some Celtic magic of it’s own – * * *
