Directed by: Stephen Chbosky

PG-13. 103 mins

An adorably sentimental and nostalgic film with charming performances that certainly give justice to the source material. Based on his bestselling novel, Stephen Chbosky writes and directs this coming-of-age tale. Lerman plays Charlie, a socially awkward and emotionally damaged freshman who is delighted to make friends with Sam (Emma Watson) and Patrick (Ezra Miller), a pair of seniors who share in his insecurities. Disjointed at times, the film still manages to convey some strong messages among the heavily character-driven story. Equal parts tragic and humorous, The Perks of Being a Wallflower reminds us that with a little help from our friends, surviving the hellish high school years is entirely possible – * * * 1/2
