PG-13. 145 mins

An elegant and riveting addition to the franchise; Skyfall celebrates Bond’s 50th anniversary in style. This time around, we see Bond (Daniel Craig) in an existential crisis after he is shot down in the field, leading him to question the loyalty of M (Judi Dench). Suddenly, MI6 is under attack by a man from her past and Bond must jump back into the field to destroy one of the most menacing villains yet. Mendes creates the perfect balance of action, drama, and self-referentiality. Skyfall solidifies Daniel Craig as the definitive Bond – his portrayal grasps the emotional depth and quiet sensuality that made Bond so iconic. Not to be outdone, Javier Bardem is brilliantly twisted as the villain with some serious mommy issues. The 23rd instalment of the franchise brings us back to basics, opting for less gadgets and gusto. Beautifully lensed and tightly plotted; Skyfall proves that Bond still has some vitality in him yet – * * * *
