Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters

Directed by: Tommy Wirkola

R. 100 mins

A disastrously campy fairytale revamp which fails at being horrifying or humorous. After escaping an evil witch when they were young, siblings Hansel (Jeremy Renner) and Gretel (Gemma Arterton) have become the ultimate vigilantes, vowing to take down any witch that threatens the peace of local farming communities. Suddenly, children are missing and an exceptionally devilish witch (Famke Janssen) proves to be the ultimate test for the heroic siblings. Hansel and Gretel possess impressive weaponry and a pantheon of foul language, but these qualities may only appeal to a 12-year-old boy. The witches themselves are devoid of any backstory and the plot itself is wafer thin. There is no reason this couldn’t have been a delightfully campy adventure with bloody violence and biting satire but instead, Wirkola has gone too far and the entire thing proves confusing and far removed from cult classic status. For all the comical anachronisms and cartoon splatter, Hansel and Gretel is ultimately a waste of talent and, for even the most immature viewer, a waste of time – *
